Action packed race two for Jagonya Ayam drivers at Spa

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit provided yet another thrilling spectacle for the second FIA Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend. Following a tough qualifying session yesterday, today’s race was all about attacking, and all three Jagonya Ayam drivers made progress. Tom Blomqvist took points once again in eighth, as did Antonio Giovinazzi in ninth while Sean Gelael just missed out in 13th.

Starting from 18th on the grid, Giovinazzi was the lead Jagonya Ayam car and at the start made up two positions to 16th. Sean Gelael managed to make up a place to move up to 19th while Blomqvist was flying climbing from 22nd to 15th by the end of lap two.

Blomqvist then passed Jordan King in the Carlin car before putting Hector Hurst under pressure, the Brit soon passed Hurst for 12th place as he continued his battle towards the points paying positions.

By lap seven Blomqvist was 11th while Giovinazzi was also making progress and was 15th while Gelael was 18th. Indonesian Gelael wasn’t content though, a fantastic move on Hurst on lap 8 put him in 16th place.

A safety car period was called while an accident between Felix Serralles and Lucas Auer was cleared away and at the restart Blomqvist was ninth, Giovinazzi 13th and Gelael 15th.

The final laps of the race proved particularly action packed with numerous changes for position. Blomqvist had closed in on Nicholas Latifi, while Giovinazzi was now running behind his team mate in ninth. Gelael was still making progress but unfortunately ran out of laps to make his way into the points and was 13th at the flag. Blomqvist, who took points for eighth was following home by Giovinazzi in ninth.

“We’re very proud of the drivers’ performance today”, said Trevor Carlin following the second race of the weekend. “All three Jagonya Ayam drivers bounced back from a difficult qualifying session and it’s a pity they weren’t able to show their potential from further up the grid. It will be another tough race for them tomorrow, but I’ve been very impressed with the way they dealt with that challenge today and hope to see more of the same in race three.”

Reflecting on the race, Blomqvist said “That was the most amount of fun I’ve had in a while that’s for sure! It was a pretty busy race, my first lap wasn’t great and I took it a bit steady but then it got a bit exciting on lap two and from there I worked my way through the field. There was a few guys going off then coming back on and cutting you up, cutting chicanes; it was a pretty crazy race. But I’m glad to get in the points from where we started and the car was pretty good.”
