Indonesian motor racing star Sean Gelael and Italian team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi, who is part of the same’ Sean GP’ Management stable, will compete in the prestigious FIA Formula 3 European Championship this year after concluding their respective 2013 deals with top team Double R Racing.

Jakarta 16-year-old Gelael, one of Asia’s most talented young sportsmen, is heading into only his second season of single-seater car racing this year and the leap into the ultra-competitive world of European F3 with British team Double R marks a significant step-up.

Even so, the teenager has already made a big impression in only one year of ‘slicks and wings’ racing by finishing fourth overall in the 2012 Formula Pilota China Championship – with one race win to his credit at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia – and runner-up in the ‘Best Asian Driver Trophy’.

In addition to his Formula Pilota campaign, Gelael also contested the final rounds of the 2012 Formula Abarth Championship at Monza, Italy, and posted a best finish of seventh position along with two further top 10 results from the three races contested. Prior to racing in cars, the Indonesian was a title winner in karts – he won the 2010 Senior Formula 125 Asian Karting Open Championship.

Giovinazzi, who has been racing alongside Gelael for the past year in Asia, won the Formula Pilota China title after a sensational season in which he achieved several victories and podium finishes on his way to a 50-point winning margin.

Along team-mate Gelael, the 19-year-old Italian entered the Formula Abarth finale last year and made a huge impact by taking a remarkable victory in the first race – carving his way through from the back of the grid in wet conditions – and taking another win in race three.

Prior to his graduation to cars in 2012, Giovinazzi enjoyed great success in karting at European and World level. Winning the Italian National Trophy 60cc crown and Euro Trophy title during his debut season in 2006, he went on to be a front-running force in KF3 and KF2 level karting – finishing second in the 2011 Bridgestone Cup and third in the CIK-FIA World Cup.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have agreed deals with Sean and Antonio, they’re both fantastically talented young drivers and have both shown a huge amount of promise already”, said Double R team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, “European F3 is incredibly challenging, one of the toughest and most competitive championships in the world, but we’re confident both drivers will be strong.

“They each did a sensational job in their first season in cars last year in Formula Pilota, Sean’s performances, at such a young age, belied his limited experience. Antonio’s results tally speaks for itself, he dominated the championship and we’re sure they’ll both progress well in F3 this year.”

Joining Gelael and Giovinazzi at Double R will be 19-year-old female racer Tatiana Calderón from Bogota in Colombia, South America. All three drivers will compete in Mercedes-powered Dallara F312 cars.

Monza in Italy will host round one of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship on 23rd/24th March.

Note to editors:

Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, Kimi Räikkönen and the Finn’s manager Steve Robertson together founded the Räikkönen Robertson Racing team in late 2004 to compete in the British Formula 3 International Series the following year. Based in Woking, Surrey, the squad quickly enjoyed success and became a front-running force with British driver Dan Clarke taking the team’s maiden victory. Switching from Mugen-Honda engines to Mercedes HWA power for the 2006 season, the team expanded to three cars. In only its second season of British F3, Räikkönen Robertson won the prestigious championship with Mike Conway, who took 14 race victories, and the partnership also went on to take a maiden win in the 2006 Macau F3 Grand Prix – the first British success there since 1999. Hieatt became majority shareholder of the rebranded Double R Racing team at the beginning of 2011 and agreed a new engine deal with Mercedes. (
