Blomqvist wins at Silverstone

Tom Blomqvist took the first win for the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin team today, in round one of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. The British racer took a lights to flag victory and controlled a safety car restart as well as the fastest lap at Silverstone. Team mate Antonio Giovinazzi had a difficult start and managed to recover to 12th while Sean Gelael made great progress from his starting position and crossed the line 15th.

The first race of the season saw Blomqvist line up on pole this morning, at a blustery and cold Silverstone circuit. As the lights went out, the Jagonya Ayam driver made the perfect start to defend from flying rookie Esteban Ocon and led the field around lap one.

Behind him, Giovinazzi had endured a tough first lap, the Italian was forced wide at turn 1, picking up some damage to his car and was 12th at the end of lap one. Gelael meanwhile had made a lightning start from his 20th gird slot and was already up to 16th and challenging for 15th place when the safety car was deployed on lap two, which temporarily neutralised the racing action.

As the safety car pulled in several laps later, Blomqvist controlled the restart perfectly to pull away as the cars behind him squabbled. Behind the leaders both Giovinazzi and Gelael were fighting their own battles. Gelael made a fantastic move on John Bryant-Meisner on lap 7 to take 14th place as Giovinazzi ran in 11th.

At the front, Blomqvist looked completely in control. Without too much pressure from second placed man Ocon, Blomqvist set the fastest lap of the race on lap 14.

As the race entered the final stages though, it was Giovinazzi who was under pressure, struggling slightly with older tyres and coming under more pressure from Dennis Van de Laar. The Italian racer defended for a couple of laps, but was eventually passed, dropping to 12th place with only two laps to go.

Blomqvist meanwhile crossed the line to take the team’s first victory of the season, with Giovinazzi 12th and Gelael 15th after a last lap attack from Spike Goddard.

Speaking about his race, Blomqvist said, “Very happy with the result, I knew that I had to keep the lead on the first lap because obviously in Formula 3 and in particular at a circuit like this, it’s difficult to overtake. I managed to get a good first lap and I had a good restart after the safety car and tried to control the race from there. The car felt good so thanks to the team for this result.”

Race two will take place at 13.20 later today.
