1-2 for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin in Hockenheim

The Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers made it three in the top 10 today, with an impressive qualifying performance in Hockenheim, Germany. Tom Blomqvist took a stunning pole position, just beating team mate Antonio Giovinazzi to the top spot, who qualified second. Sean Gelael continued a strong day, qualifying in the top ten for the second time today at the final round of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

All three Jagonya Ayam drivers showed strong pace today, all in the top ten for both of today’s qualifying sessions. Blomqvist set the third quickest time in first qualifying early this afternoon, which will set the grid for race one on Saturday. Team mate Giovinazzi was fourth despite a brake issue, while Gelael impressed with his best qualifying performance of the season in eighth.

In a change from the normal schedule, the drivers had only a few hours between first and second qualifying which took place on Friday evening rather than late on Saturday. Blomqvist was keen to improve on his third placed spot, believing there to be more pace in the car, while Giovinazzi faced a race against time to join the second qualifying session, with a brake issue delaying his car leaving the garage.

As the second qualifying run of the day got underway, Giovinazzi was able to join his team mates in the pit lane. Despite his earlier issue, the Italian racer showed little hesitation in pushing the limit and was a quick from the off, lying third in the early stages. Giovinazzi improved next time round, taking the provisional top spot before a red flag called a temporary halt to proceedings.

With the field forced back into the pits, it was also the perfect time to change to new tyres. After a short time the track was green again, with the drivers heading out to try and beat Giovinazzi’s time. Blomqvist by now was fifth quickest while Gelael was ninth.

Fighting this weekend for the title of vice-champion, Blomqvist was pushing hard. The British racer snatched pole from his team mate with just a few minutes remaining, with no other drivers able to better his effort of 1.31.817. Giovinazzi maintained P2 to the chequered flag, while Gelael was 10th.

Reflecting on his session, Blomqvist said, “I felt like I should have got pole in the first qualifying session. I was confident going into the session as I knew I had it within me from the first session. We made a few little tweaks to the car which I think helped. But it was a bit nip and tuck there with the red flag I was on a good lap before that, but then went for the new set of tyres. Happy for the team as the car was really good and the other guys [Antonio and Sean] are doing well too so it makes it even better.”

“Yeah it was a very good session”, said team mate Giovinazzi. “Before the red flag I was P1, so I was feeling very happy with the car. After we put on the new tyres I had a little problem with the brake, but for the team to be P1 and P2 and Sean in P10 is a good results for us. I’m looking forward to the races.”

Gelael added, “I think we could have gone a little better in that second session, maybe eighth or ninth, but overall I’m satisfied with the improvement, so far it is becoming a strong end to the championship. We have to finish it off on a high tomorrow but so far it’s been a good weekend.”
